Chapter 6
Directory Services Manager for NetWare
Introduction
For most computer systems, the expense of initial purchase and installation is not nearly as significant as the cost of ongoing maintenance and support. It should not come as a surprise then that two technologies are more costly to support than one because the level or amount of expertise and labour could be double.
Having Multiple network operating systems does not magically make the situation simpler. In essence many of the same tasks must now be performed twice. These tasks include system backups, user account maintenance and so on.. If you are to introduce Windows NT into a NetWare environment, the best solution to user management is to find a common utility which will allow you to manage both systems.
Microsofts Directory Services for NetWare allows NetWare servers to be managed as if they were resources in a Windows NT domain. Novell is also introducing their own strategy code-named TOBASCO to manage Windows NT servers. TOBASCO allows Windows NT to use Novells Directory Services by loading an NDS service on Windows NT. We will look at a similar third party solution called Synchronicity for Windows NT from NetVision. Synchronicity allows Windows NT domains to become part of the NetWare 4.x Directory Services. Windows NT domain management is still used; however, Synchronicity synchronizes changes with the NetWare NDS. In this chapter, then, we will examine single management strategies based on Microsofts Directory Services for NetWare (DSNW). and Synchronicity.
