Chapter 4

Client Connectivity

Introduction

This chapter covers NetWare and Windows NT client workstation connectivity options. Particular emphasis will be placed on highlighting connectivity from any side of the network: NetWare clients to Windows NT server, and Windows clients to NetWare server. Access to the NetWare server will be reviewed through two possible methods: directly through NetWare client software, or indirectly through the Windows NT Server Gateway. Once connected, we will demonstrate how NetWare command utilities function differently depending on which of the two connection methods are used and why the differences exists. From the Windows NT perspective, we will cover how the Performance Monitor can be used to monitor the client driver throughput to assist us in determining which client connection method best addresses your requirements. Finally, we will look at some of the alternative methods such as Network File System (NFS), Macintosh Appeltalk, and File Transfer Protocol that can be used to connect network clients to either NetWare or Windows NT.
