NetWare to NT Complete:Integration and Migration

Chapter 3
Protocol Integration
Introduction
In this chapter, we identify all of the network communication protocols used in NetWare and Windows NT network environments. Considering that organizations will potentially need to support multiple network communication protocols, we will discuss the challenges associated with multi protocol network environments and provide heterogeneous solutions that will create efficient use of the underlying network infrastructure. Given that we can communicate from several directions over the network, we will review procedures to configure multi protocol support on NetWare and Windows NT client workstations and servers. You will see that both systems support a range of networking transport and service protocols. We will focus particular attention on what each protocol can do because, although both Network Operating Systems (NOS) will support the same lower level transport protocol for internetworking, such support does not imply the ability to access services (File and Print) running on both of the same systems. Although this chapter covers the detail about network protocols, Chapter 4 will go into the detail of implementing the many protocols varions. We cannot stress enough that a good understanding of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model and the functions it describes is critical to later understanding the protocol solutions that vendors such as Novell and Microsoft provide.
Chapter Objectives
o Review the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model
o Differentiate between Internetworking and Interoperability
o Identify protocols used in NetWare network environments
o Identify protocols used in Windows NT network environments
o Evaluate various network transport and service protocols with the goal of identifying the one most applicable to your network requirements
o Identify implementation and management issues for multiprotocol networks
